Fiesta Peterborough Festival Coordinator


2016 will mark the 7th annual Caribbean Street Festival – a one-day cultural event held on Hunter Street in downtown Peterborough in early August. This year as the festival organizing has shift organizational hands so has the name of the event to Fiesta Peterborough. The Festival is coordinated by a volunteer committee comprised of local business owners, musicians, volunteers, Community and Race Relations Committee and the New Canadian Centre. The event and aims to celebrate Caribbean culture – food, entertainment and activities – as both an awareness raising event and a tourism activity that promotes downtown Peterborough to the wider region. We are seeking a Festival Coordinator to assist the volunteer committee in all aspects of the event planning.


Hours and Duration: 30 hours a week for 8 weeks

Compensation: $11.25/hour


Primary Areas of Responsibility and Specific Duties:

  • Coordinate promotion of the Festival using local, regional and social media

  • Solicit sponsorships and other funding for the event

  • Coordinate food and merchandise vendors

  • Recruit and organize volunteers for the day of the event

  • Keep accurate records of all programme and financial activities related to the event

  • Any other tasks related to the successful outcome of the Festival

  • Prepare documentation for grant applications and reports

  • Research and prepare recommendations for future festivals

  • Other festival administrative and programming work as required

Experience and Skills

  • Education or experience in event planning, marketing and/or communications

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills

  • Experience with volunteering and/or volunteer coordination

  • Ties to Caribbean community an asset

  • Experience with performing arts community an asset

  • Knowledge of the Peterborough community an asset

  • Ability to take initiative and work independently, as well as part of a team

  • Some knowledge of anti-racism and anti-oppression principles and practices

  • Some experience in social justice and community organizing

  • Understanding of CRRC’s goals and mandate

Terms of employment: 30hrs/week for approximately 8 weeks. As an anti-racist community organization CRRC is dedicated to creating meaningful for people of colour and indigenous folks. We support the application from all marginalized folks and encourage you to self-identify in your application.

This position is funding by Canada Summer Jobs, a federal government grant and as such must be legally entitled to work in Canada and meet to following criteria:

  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act;

  • Full-time student during the previous academic year, with the intention to return to school full-time for the next academic year;

  • Between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start of the employment.
